For example:

6cm x 3cm = 18cm2

A = 18cm2

Calculate the are of compound shapes. Show your workings out.

For example:

2cm x 2cm = 4cm2                                                 10cm + 4cm = 14cm2

Area a = 4cm2                                                             Total A= 142

2cm x 5cm = 10cm2

Area b = 10 cm2

L.C. Multiplication and Division word problems

 Step 1

All groups to read the instructions below and answer the following questions.

To find out what one item is worth, we always divide the total cost by how many items we have.

For example, if six cakes cost 54p we would do

54p ÷ 6 = 9p

One cake = 9p

Step 2

All groups to complete the following questions.

To find the cost of any amount of items, we divide first to find what one is worth and then multiply back to the amount wanted.

For example,

If 8 bananas cost 72p and we want to work out how much 3 bananas cost, we would do:

72p ÷ 8 = 9p

9p x 3 = 27p
